Johnny was born on August 20, 1967 to Laura Lawrence and an absent father. Laura married Sid Weinberg, a wealthy yet highly abusive man who used his financial power to intimidate Laura and Johnny. The young boy became the primary target of Sid's disdain. Sid verbally and physically abused Johnny and Laura, though Johnny learned to distance himself from the fighting by listening to his Walkman. At school, Johnny didn't have any friends and was bullied by the older or larger students. However, while riding his bike home one day in 1979, Johnny came across a karate dojo by the name of Cobra Kai. Inside he found John Kreese teaching his students self-defense and aggressive maneuvers, which inspired Johnny greatly. He excitedly talked about the dojo with his mother and asked his stepfather if he could study karate, but Sid ridiculed him, and dismissed it as a waste of his money. He viewed it as unneeded as Johnny already got into fights at school. Sid relented only after Laura suggested that it could help Johnny make friends.
